Needs assessment of community health workers to enhance efficient delivery of their services for community case management of malaria in Kenya

Abstract Background Malaria continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Africa. Community Case Management malaria (CCMm) which is undertaken by engaging Health Workers (CHWs) effectively address management cases some endemic communities was explored this study. The aim assess needs CHWs that would help sustain retain their services enhance efficient delivery CCMm. Methods Using semi-structured questionnaires, data on gathered through a qualitative study consisting in-depth interviews focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted among participants five districts western Kenya. comprised 100 CHWs, mothers children under years 25 key informants made up public health officers clinicians involved were English Swahili or Dholuo, local language. recorded audio transcribed later. analysis done using NVivo version 7 software transcripts coded after themes related objectives identified. Results All recognized need train update work as well remunerating them for services. part perceived provision gloves, rapid diagnostic test kits (RDTs), lancets, cotton wool ethanol, bins (to dispose RDTs lancets), together with drugs treating clients essential undertake CCMm communities. Other logistical incentives mentioned successful included: gumboots, raincoats, torch lights, mobile phones, means transportation (bicycles motorbikes), uniforms ID cards identification.
